Things I'm Trying Not To Do As A Mum To A Child On The Autistic Spectrum
'Trying' is the key word here
Whenever I’m asked what my biggest learning curve has been since becoming a mum to three, I say it’s the revelation you really need to parent each child differently, you’re never just one type of mum. Of course it makes sense, we all know every child’s different with unique characteristics so why would the method be a stock one? I guess it just never really occurred to me until I found myself tweaking my approach the second time around when I realised my child wasn’t always responding in a similar way to my first born had. Since I’ve had a third, the same has happened again. I’m adapting as we go along. Twisting here, squeezing there, kneading my attitude and effort like Playdoh. The way I comfort her, tackle tantrums, keep her busy etc is often in contrast to how I’ve gone about it before and it’s interesting to see which key fits.
